TDG

After the recent 3 day National Talent Development Camp at Hartpury College you will all be pleased to know that Sophie Watkiss has been selected for the RFUW 2008/09 Talent Development Group(TDG).

Sophie's displays for Worcester last year mark her out as a real prospect and we all look forward to her demonstrating further progress in the coming season.

Some people might think that as National Cup Winners & National 10's winners last season Worcester may have had more than one representative in the TDG squad however our success last year was down to quality coaching & the incredible hard work & committment of the players that took us unbeaten until our defeat in the semi-final of the 7's on the last day of the season. Rugby really is the ultimate team game and last year you girls showed week in week out the sort of qualities that make a stand out team. Let's do it again next season!

You are undoubtedly right about the quality of coaching etc. at Worcester being significant in a team "lacking" in TDGs being able to consistently beat teams full of them.

However, I wonder if there is an additional explanation - the fact that (because hardly any are getting pulled out for TDG etc.) your girls are used to playing and training alongside each other under the same coaches all season. It is non insignificant that teams packed with Big Names often underperform - different coaches, maybe different playing positions, and playing partners each week must confuse.

Its another reason (see the Letchworth Blog) why I am convinced that the current structure of the game, and especially the regional level, is actually damaging - not only to the "ordinary" player, but the elite player as well.
