Numbers - training and overall

We had 8 girls at training this weekend. We only had 15 to go to Jimmie's Angels. We regularly get into this situation every season but it's getting tougher this year.

We need more players, is the bottom line. Can you all ask your non-playing friends at school and college? We need to recruit or we may have to consider formally joining up with someone else in order to fulfil fixtures.

Steve

Well done to all the girls that played.

Congratulations to Worcester, another outstanding performance!

i must stress though girls we still have a lot of hard work and some serious training to do. The season will continue to get harder and tougher so lets keep at it and work hard!

Great Start!!

Summer pre-season proved good as we kick started the season with a satisfying 53-5 victory! some quality attacking backs moves matched by some equally brilliant hard work from the forwards. With many girls having their first U18 game, or first game at their new position we couldn't have asked for a more pleasing outcome. Special credit to the younger girls who really stepped up and matured perfectly into Under 18s rugby! I'm pleased to say how well the team pulled together, communicated and proved any doubters wrong - Worcester will remain as strong as ever! Well done to all the girls, despite the hot weather everyone played brilliantly, lets continue now to train hard, improve our skills and have an enjoyable season!! :)

Training (pre-season and in-season)

Training is continuing on Wednesday nights and we had 11 U18s this week,. These are great numbers and are allowing us to really move things along and skills are improving across the whole squad.

The first Sunday training is on 7 September and we will be on Cummings Farm, just not sure which pitch yet. It would be great to see everyone on both this Wednesday and next Sunday.

TDG

After the recent 3 day National Talent Development Camp at Hartpury College you will all be pleased to know that Sophie Watkiss has been selected for the RFUW 2008/09 Talent Development Group(TDG).

Sophie's displays for Worcester last year mark her out as a real prospect and we all look forward to her demonstrating further progress in the coming season.

Some people might think that as National Cup Winners & National 10's winners last season Worcester may have had more than one representative in the TDG squad however our success last year was down to quality coaching & the incredible hard work & committment of the players that took us unbeaten until our defeat in the semi-final of the 7's on the last day of the season. Rugby really is the ultimate team game and last year you girls showed week in week out the sort of qualities that make a stand out team. Let's do it again next season!

Loads of players available for the Bears this week for the friendly against the Army. The Army turned up with a weakened team and only started with 13 players. Other players turned up and as there were some injuries they were needed.

The Bears started well and several of the players we know had good games. Ale was running things in the centre and Jo Hart had another storming game in the full back and centres. Tolley was looking good in the forwards until she was forced off with an ankle problem. Weewee was having a reasonably quiet game on the wing until BJ from Camp Hill put her over for a try in the corner. She was unlucky not to score again a little while later when she was held up by the Army in the same corner. Jo put in a fantastic break from the centre to score. Coral put in a 50m run to score while Bean missed a tackle to allow the Army back into the game in the last few minutes. The final score was a Bears win of 22-10. Look at the Bears web site for a full report.

(All of the above is true except for any reference to Coral or Bean. They just turned up to watch... Good support girls..................)

HPAs

Many of you (most of you) haven't confirmed attendance at the HPAs yet. You will have received an email with a PayPal link. Do that and pay your £5 and that's good enough to be registered.

You won't get any more reminders from the RFUW, so take this opportunity.......

Steve

Rugby League (contd.)

Rhi is having a good time. The team is friendly, the training is good and all rugby related and I think she might even get a bit of game time against the RAF tomorrow. All 16+ players ought to have a think about doing it. It'll do wonders to keep up fitness levels across the summer. I know it's adult players (over 16 counts as adult in League) but trust me, you have the skills to keep up. The team is the Coventry Bears so have a look

I can take people from Bromsgrove if lifts are needed.

Seven's results

Not exactly what we wanted for the end of the season, but the day stayed dry and the rugby was of the highest quality.

We were drawn in smaller pool (one team short) and played Letchworth first and then Tynedale. We won both matches with some big scores and went into the quarter finals where we played our old rivals Burfield. A win there and we were into the semi final stages.

We were drawn against Exeter Saracens who we had never played before. They put 4 tries on us! Fair play, they were a quality team and played some superb 7s rugby. They had some great players and we struggled to keep up with them. They went on to contest the final against Wimbourne and our season finished on a lower note.

Having said that, we won a chunk of silverware this year. Cup winners, 10s winners and regional champions is a record second to none and Rich, Keith, Pete and I are justifiably proud of the team we have coached and seen growing in stature over the last two years. It's been a privilege and a pleasure to be involved in such a team.

West Midlands are regional champions

Congratulations are due to the West Midlands regional squad who had a great day on Sunday. Winning both pool matches (29-0 and 17-0) put them into the cup rounds.

A win against a tough East region side 5-0 put them into the final. A controversial match followed but the West Mids were victorious with a 7-0 score. The coaches handled their squads well and everyone played their part even though some were unable to play in the final. No matter, the squad performance got us to the final and helped us win.

Worcester regional players:

Siobhan Adams
Leanne Cook
Coral Hinton
Ale Lewis
Sarah Mimnagh
Kim Morris
Jade Newman
Anna Norris
Beth O'Brien
Katie Pittaway
Eliza Slinn
Lydia Thompson
Stacey Tolley
Rhiannon Watkins

Well done all.

Match report v welwyn/basford

On sunday the u/18 girls played welwyn/basford in the final of the u/18 national cup at Lichfield rfc. The match turned out to be cliff hanger in the end. Worcester opened the scoring early on with a try by Bean but the opposition soon scored to make it 5-5. No quarter was being given by both sides but a try by Lydia before half time made it 10-5 to worcester at the break. The break seemed to suite welwyn/ basford the best and they came out very strong in the second half to soon score to make it 10-10. Welwyn/basford were still pushing worcester very hard and scored a try with about 10 minutes to go to make it 15-10 . This seemed to be the wake up call that worcester needed and started to push the opposition hard and eventually with 3 minutes left Asskiss scored under the posts which was converted by bean to make it 17-15 to worcester which turned out to be the final score. Credit must go to the players of both teams who played an excellent high standard of rugby which was played in good spirit to make it a very close final .

U18 cup final winning team 2008

CUP FINAL SUNDAY

Ten top women’s rugby clubs from across the country will be hoping to end their season with some silverware this weekend when they contest the RFUW National Cup Finals Day on Sunday April 13th at Lichfield RFC.
In the Premiership Cup, kick-off 315pm, this year’s Premiership winners Saracens will take on Richmond who defeated Wasps in the semi-finals. Monday, 31 March 2008

Into the final!

A very hard-fought day at Burton RFC. First up against Leonidas Ladies who had knocked us out of the cup last year (and who we played for 70 minutes earlier in the year for a 0-0 draw). A very tough game with some hard-as-nails opposition. Both sides up very quickly in defence which meant little wide ball. Not for want of trying from both sides. A breakthrough from Asskiss into the corner put us 5-0 up. Very quickly Leos came back and put one under the post and made it 5-7. Asskiss managed to get through with a nippy run and Bean converted for a 12-7 win.

Leos then played Burfield (Burton/Lichfield combined) and ran a little amok scoring a number of tries for a 24-0 win. We had to beat Burfield to confirm going through. A loss would get down to points difference.

Playing Leos had taken it out of both teams and while defences were very tight, we failed to make much of scoring opportunities. Bean converted her own try to go 7-0 up but some over-enthusiastic rucking gave away a penalty just outside our own 22 which Lauren from Burfield punished us with the kick to make it 7-3.

Some tough defence was needed to hold Burfield out to finish with a win putting us into the final.

Congratulations to: Beth, Nic, Asskiss, Alyssa, Fidler, Bean, Ale, Tolley, Kim, Shove, Leanne, Ghostie, Lie, Pikey, Weewee, Coral, and Wino.

Westcliffe and Letchworth report

An incredibly early start saw us down in Westcliff in Essex. Sadly not a hint of seaside, but some tough rugby instead. We were due to play a triangular with Westcliff and Letchworth. We were to start with Westcliff so we began the warmup. Unfortunately we had our first injury even before the first match kicked off as a tackle on Shove by Spidee meant that Shove had to head off to hospital with a shoulder problem before the first ball was kicked in anger. A separated shoulder means a couple of weeks off so hoping for a quick recovery there. Weewee had to step in and played her first matches as prop, so thanks to her.

Westcliff were tough opposition and we knew that they would be hard opponents and so it proved.Their number 8 caused havoc through most of the first half but Bean managed to convert her own try to give us a half-time 0-7 lead. Some tough half-time talking from the coaches allowed us to make a much better showing in the second half and the tackling was much improved. Having said that Westcliffe scored but a final try from Bob closed hings out at 5-12.

We then went into a second match against Letchworth. We had the advantage of having our game heads on and first half tries from Asskiss and Bob allowed us to carry a 0-25 lead into the break. Jade, Fidler and Lydia scored before some great individual play got Letchworth their try. The match finished 5-40 to us. Some great hospitality from Westcliffe and it was time to head home. Our thanks to Westcliffe and Letchworth for the day.

Remember that regional training is at King's Norton RFC on Sunday. Aim to get there for 12:30 for a 1:00pm start.

The weather is looking as if there might be some snow. Check on http://hometown.aol.co.uk/keanclifford/myhomepage/newsletter.html

Update on Scotland tour

We have one match pencilled in with Murrayfield Wanderers girls, we have a coach quote which we are comparing with the costs of flying. Once we get another team and the travel options sorted we are close.

Ale has tracked down some accommodation options in a hostel and we are looking for opinions from players. Speak to Ale, Tolley or Pikey as your player representatives.

Fund raising - Quiz night at Bromsgrove RFC on March 14 and we will sort out some bag packing and other options.

Westcliffe coach confirmed

The coach is confirmed as leaving the club at 07:15 on Sunday morning. We need to fill it up to avoid having to use club funds so I'm looking for as many players and supporters as we can.

Let me know if there are any problems.

Away to Westcliffe

We are off to Westcliffe on Sunday 27 January. Westcliffe is near Southend-on-Sea so is a long, long journey. Due to this we will be taking a coach. As before the cost will be an estimated maximum of £15. If it's more I'll let you know. More importantly we need to fill up the coach to minimise the costs.

We will be playing Westcliffe and Letchworth and looking for a 1:00pm kick off. They have similar problems in terms of changing rooms as us, so turning up in as much match kit as possible will be an advantage.

Wednesday training indoors

Due to the conditions of the pitches training will be held indoors tonight. Go to the shed for a 7:30pm start.

Do not go over to Westons land.

Leos U18s vs. Worcester U18s

After a good win against Lichfield/Burton we headed up north to play last seasons cup winners. We played a later kick-off at Castleford RUFC as there had been a girl's development day looking to attract more U15 players to the sport, which we were pleased to support.

The players were all fired up as Leos had knocked us out of the cup last year at the semi-final stage and as we arrived at Castleford they had the cup standing in a prominent position on a table. We had gone up with only 16 players and an injured scrum-half so we were playing a number of players out of position in order to make up a team.

We started off against a team including 5 Talent Development Group and two current England U20 internationals so it was never going to be easy. There was a big pack and a back division that came up very quickly to shut down space. Within the first 10 minutes Twink held up the Leos full-bck over the line and we were under pressure for much of the next 10 minutes. The defence was up to the task and after some aggressive mauling from Leos (which we struggled to contain) we went into the break at 0-0.

After half-time things didn't get any easier but a couple of changes of tactics made the game much more even-handed. We had more time inside the Leos 22, but neither side could make the final break and the match ended at 0-0. The players afterwards agreed that it was the toughest match probably since the cup round last year and the coaches agreed that it was probably the best performance this side has ever put up.

Player of the match went to Twink for saving the try and also for running from her own in-goal area with 4 Leos players between her and her support (and still getting over the half-way line). Put a few hearts in mouths....

Team: Tolley (captain), Trig, Shove, Ghostie, Wino, Lize, Pikey, Spidee, Kimbo, Fidler, Bean, Bob, Jadey-wadey, Nips and Twink. Replacements: Ale and Weewee.

Coach confirmed

Remember we're on the coach tomorrow. Please be at the club for a 9.00am start. There is enough room for parents to come along as well, so the more the merrier. We have 19 players I believe, plus Keith and I so space for a number of other passengers.

Travel to Leos by coach

I have booked a 35 seater coach to take us to Leos on Sunday. It's a long way away so it is an early start I'm afraid. The coach is getting to the club (nearest car park to the main entrance) for 9:00am.

We are due to kick off at 1:45pm so are looking to arrive at 1:00pm to warm up. We can stop on the way (must for 30 minutes for the driver). We will leave at 4:30pm-ish and will get back around 8:00pm. The cost of the coach is £15 per head maximum. If we fill up a 35 seater then the cost will reduce.

There will be no cars going up there and I have paid personally for the coach, so remember to bring your fare along.............

The match is to be played at Castleford RUFC and their web site gives details of the development day that we are part of, so we need to put up a good performance to show the quality of women's U18 rugby.
